Dakota Terraces Trail traverses the upland sage terraces east of Ridgway Reservoir, offering intimate views of the Cimarron Ridge and the broad Uncompahgre Valley without the crowds that gather along the more popular reservoir loop. At 3.5 miles with only 200 feet of elevation gain, this easy loop is perfect for families with young children or visitors seeking a shorter outing before or after water activities at the reservoir. The trail winds through high desert shrubland dominated by big sagebrush, rabbitbrush, and native grasses that provide habitat for horned larks, sage thrashers, and pronghorn antelope that roam the open terraces in small family groups. Rocky outcrops along the upper terrace offer natural rest spots with panoramic views stretching from the San Juan Mountains in the south to the Grand Mesa rising to the north. Interpretive signs explain the geological history of the Dakota Formation sandstone that gives the trail its name and forms the colorful rock layers visible throughout the park. Sunrise and sunset light bathes these terraces in warm golden tones that photographers find especially rewarding. The $10 vehicle entrance fee applies, and dogs are permitted on leash along the entire route.
