Pa-Co-Chu-Puk Trail – Ridgway Sp
Pa-Co-Chu-Puk Trail, whose name translates to Uncompahgre River in the Ute language, follows the dramatic canyon corridor of the Uncompahgre River through a lush riparian landscape that feels entirely different from the arid mesa terrain surrounding it. Towering cottonwood trees create a cathedral canopy that turns brilliant gold each October, while willows and tamarisk crowd the riverbanks where beavers have built extensive lodge complexes visible from the trail. The 5-mile moderate loop climbs canyon walls to gain views of the river corridor below before descending back to the riparian zone, providing excellent contrast between the verdant canyon bottom and the dry sage-covered slopes above. Yellow warblers, spotted sandpipers, and belted kingfishers patrol the river corridor throughout the warmer months, making this a rewarding destination for birdwatchers. Fishing access points along the trail offer opportunities to cast for brown and rainbow trout in the Uncompahgre River. The trail is especially popular in autumn when fall color peaks typically in mid-to-late October at this elevation. The $10 vehicle fee applies. Dogs on leash are welcome on the trail throughout the year.
