Carpenter Peak Trail

Carpenter Peak Trail is the most demanding hike in Roxborough State Park, climbing 1,000 feet over six miles round-trip to the park's high point at 7,160 feet above sea level. The effort is richly rewarded at the summit, where panoramic views stretch across the hogback ridges of the Front Range, west toward the snowy crests of the Continental Divide, and east across the plains toward the Denver skyline on clear days.

The trail begins in the sandstone canyon country before ascending steadily through ponderosa pine and Douglas fir forest. The transition from red rock desert to montane forest within a single hike is one of the trail's most compelling features, illustrating the ecological diversity packed into a small park. The upper slopes offer reliable wildflower displays from June through August, and the summit is a favored spot for watching raptors migrate along the Front Range in autumn. Physical fitness and appropriate footwear are recommended given the sustained elevation gain. The park charges $10 per vehicle and does not permit dogs on any of its trails.
