Fountain Valley Trail – Roxborough Sp
Fountain Valley Trail is the signature hike at Roxborough State Park, threading through one of Colorado's most dramatic Front Range landscapes. The 2.5-mile loop winds among towering red sandstone fins that jut dramatically from the valley floor, a geological showcase of the Fountain Formation that predates the Rocky Mountains themselves. These crimson walls, some reaching over 300 feet, glow brilliantly at sunrise and sunset, making early-morning and evening visits especially rewarding.
The well-maintained path stays relatively flat as it circles the valley, offering close-up views of the formations from multiple angles. Wildflowers carpet the meadows in spring and summer, while golden grasses contrast with rust-red rock in autumn. Wildlife is abundant here — watch for mule deer, wild turkeys, and raptors soaring the thermals above the fins. The park prohibits dogs and bicycles to protect its fragile ecosystem. A $10 per vehicle day-use fee applies. Roxborough is also a National Natural Landmark, ensuring its surreal geology remains preserved for future generations.
