South River Floodplain Trail

The South River Floodplain Trail provides direct and intimate access to the South Fork Shenandoah River's edge, traversing a lush bottomland corridor where the flat floodplain forest and open limestone gravel bars support a remarkable concentration of large wading birds and raptors that have made this park one of the most productive birding destinations in the northern Shenandoah Valley. The trail moves through a canopy of silver maple, cottonwood, and sycamore—all characteristic of active floodplains that experience periodic inundation—with the forest floor covered in a dense growth of wood nettle, jewel-weed, and ostrich fern that reaches head height in midsummer. Great blue herons are present year-round, wading the river shallows with deliberate stalking movements in search of the abundant sunfish and bass populations. Osprey are consistent spring and fall visitors, hovering dramatically over river pools before plunging feet-first in pursuit of fish. Belted kingfishers rattle from perches on overhanging sycamore branches throughout the warmer months. The Shenandoah River here flows over broad limestone ledges that create natural wading areas where hikers can cool their feet in summer—the water is exceptionally clear during low-flow conditions, allowing direct observation of fish navigating the current. Bald eagles have been documented nesting in this stretch of river valley, and winter sightings are nearly guaranteed.
