South Falls Loop

South Falls Loop offers the quintessential Silver Falls State Park experience in a compact and accessible package, focusing on the park's most iconic feature: the 177-foot South Falls and the dramatic behind-the-falls trail that passes through the inner canyon. The loop begins at the historic South Falls Day Lodge, a beautifully preserved 1930s Civilian Conservation Corps structure that serves as the park's main visitor center and a fine example of rustic park architecture. The trail descends through bigleaf maple and Douglas fir forest to the top of South Falls, where the creek launches itself over a massive basalt lip into the pool far below. The route then descends into the inner canyon and curves beneath the falls on a ledge carved into the basalt, allowing hikers to walk directly behind the water curtain in a thrilling and memorable passage. The roar of the falls and the cool mist create an elemental sensory experience unlike anything available at viewpoints above. The basalt overhang that makes walking behind the falls possible was created when softer rock layers eroded more quickly than the harder cap rock above, a process called hydraulic plucking. The loop climbs back out of the canyon through forest with seasonal wildflower displays including trillium, bleeding heart, and wild ginger. This shorter version of the Trail of Ten Falls is ideal for visitors with limited time or energy who want to experience the park's most celebrated feature.
