Middle Fork Loop

The Middle Fork Loop traverses one of Wyoming's most geologically fascinating canyons, where the Popo Agie River performs a dramatic disappearing act. The trail winds through a narrow limestone canyon carved by eons of water erosion, leading hikers past towering canyon walls draped in lichen and juniper.

The highlight of this loop is witnessing the Popo Agie River vanish underground into a cavernous limestone cave known as The Sinks, only to reemerge a short distance downstream at The Rise. Scientists have confirmed the connection by adding dye, yet the water reappears warmer and in greater volume than it entered, a mystery that still puzzles geologists.

The upper portion of the loop climbs through open meadows offering panoramic views of the Wind River Range, where wildflowers carpet the hillsides in summer. Mountain bluebirds, dippers, and marmots are frequent companions. This is a true gem of Wyoming's state park system, combining geological wonder with excellent wildlife viewing in a compact, accessible package suitable for most hikers.
