Collins Gulf Loop

Collins Gulf Loop traverses one of the most pristine and least-visited gorge systems in South Cumberland State Park, a 10-mile circuit through a backcountry canyon that sees a fraction of the traffic found on the famous Fiery Gizzard Trail. The Collins River cuts a deep gorge through the Cumberland Plateau, exposing layers of sandstone and conglomerate in sheer canyon walls that rise hundreds of feet above the river bottom. The trail descends steeply from the plateau rim, follows the river through the gorge bottom, then climbs back to the plateau on a different route. The gorge interior is a world apart from the plateau above, sheltered from wind and temperature extremes in a lush microclimate supporting massive hemlock trees, dense rhododendron thickets, and clear mountain streams. Several swimming holes along the Collins River provide welcome relief on summer days, though water levels must be assessed carefully before crossing. The trail is unmarked in some sections and requires good navigation skills. Primitive camping is permitted in designated areas for those wanting an overnight experience in this remote canyon. No entrance fee is charged. The Collins Gulf trailhead is located on the Savage Gulf Road near Altamont. This trail rewards experienced hikers who seek solitude in genuinely wild terrain.
