Grundy Forest Day Loop

Grundy Forest Day Loop packs an extraordinary density of waterfalls into a relatively short loop, passing five separate waterfalls within its 3.8-mile circuit through the Fiery Gizzard Creek headwaters. The loop begins at the Grundy Forest trailhead in Tracy City, the same starting point for the legendary Fiery Gizzard Trail, allowing day hikers to sample the gorge environment without committing to the full 12.5-mile point-to-point challenge. The five waterfalls range from delicate cascades to powerful falls dropping over sandstone ledges into deep emerald pools. Blue Hole, the most famous of these, draws photographers year-round for its intense turquoise water color created by the mineral-rich sandstone substrate. The surrounding Grundy Forest is a dedicated state natural area protecting old-growth hemlock and mixed hardwood forest that has never been commercially logged. Some of the hemlock trees in the gorge bottom are estimated at over 300 years of age. The sandstone formations along the route include overhanging rock shelters, massive boulders, and carved potholes in the streambed. No entrance fee is charged. This is one of the best short hikes in Tennessee for waterfall density, making it a top recommendation for hikers with limited time in the South Cumberland area.
