Starved Rock Summit Trail

Starved Rock Summit Trail climbs to the top of a 125-foot sandstone butte rising directly from the south bank of the Illinois River — the namesake rock and historical epicenter of one of the most dramatic events in Illinois history. In 1769, a group of Illinois Confederation tribal members was besieged atop the rock by a force of Potawatomi, Ottawa, and Ojibwe warriors seeking vengeance for the assassination of the Ottawa leader Pontiac, who was killed at a trading post near present-day Cahokia the previous year. The besieged group starved to death rather than surrender, giving the rock its name. The summit offers commanding views across the Illinois River valley and floodplain, with the river's wide, slow channel and forested islands visible below. The bluff top is a designated archaeological site, and the trail is lined with interpretive signs explaining both the geological history of the St. Peter Sandstone and the cultural significance of the location. The sandstone underfoot is soft and erodes readily, requiring hikers to stay on established paths. Early mornings produce spectacular fog-over-river views in autumn. The adjacent Starved Rock State Park Lodge, built by the CCC in the 1930s, is a National Historic Landmark.
