Ridgeline Nature Trail

The Ridgeline Nature Trail is a compact interpretive loop that introduces visitors to the dramatic geology and ecology of the South Unit badlands in just under a mile. Beginning near the Painted Canyon Visitor Center overlook, the trail climbs a short but steep path onto a badlands ridgeline where numbered posts correspond to a self-guided brochure available at the trailhead. Interpretive panels explain the formation of the colorful bentonite clay layers, the role of ancient lignite seams in creating the park's distinctive burned areas known as scoria, and the ecology of the mixed-grass prairie ecosystem.

From the ridgeline, sweeping views open across miles of eroded buttes and coulees toward the Little Missouri River valley below. The trail is particularly popular at sunrise and sunset when the banded sedimentary layers glow in warm light. Mule deer are commonly spotted along the rim in the early morning, and prairie falcons nest in the clay walls nearby. The loop is paved in sections near the trailhead, making it one of the more accessible badlands experiences in the park, though the exposed clay surface becomes slippery when wet. An excellent first stop for first-time visitors to Roosevelt's South Unit.
