Wetlands Nature Trail

Wetlands Nature Trail traverses a boardwalk through the headwaters wetland complex associated with the Natchez Trace Parkway corridor adjacent to Tishomingo State Park, providing an accessible exploration of a pristine wetland ecosystem. The boardwalk elevates hikers above the wetland surface, allowing passage through areas of standing water and soft substrate that would otherwise be impassable. The wetland is dominated by buttonbush, a native shrub that produces distinctive white spherical flower clusters in summer and serves as critical habitat for wildlife. Waterfowl, wading birds, and shorebirds use the open water areas, while breeding amphibians make the wetland resound with frog calls from February through May. The Natchez Trace Parkway headwaters represent one of the most significant wetland systems in northeast Mississippi, filtering runoff and maintaining water quality for downstream communities. Interpretive panels along the boardwalk explain the wetland's ecological functions including water filtration, flood control, and wildlife habitat provision. This trail is fully accessible to visitors using wheelchairs or other mobility aids. The $4 vehicle fee applies. The Natchez Trace Parkway corridor itself is a unit of the National Park Service, and the adjacent parkland adds considerable natural context to the Tishomingo State Park experience. Early morning visits are best for wildlife observation.
