Trail 3 Canyon Loop

Trail 3 at Turkey Run State Park is one of the most thrilling hiking experiences in the Midwest, a strenuous canyon loop that requires climbing iron rungs bolted into sandstone walls, descending ladders into slot canyon floors, and wading through Sugar Creek where it cuts through the canyon system. The sandstone canyons were carved by meltwater drainage from retreating glaciers roughly 14,000 years ago, creating narrow passages, towering walls, and a maze of interconnected corridors that feel entirely out of place in the flat Indiana farmland just beyond the park boundary. The canyon walls are stained with minerals in shades of ochre, rust, and gray, and draped with ferns and mosses in the perpetually damp lower levels. Sugar Creek flows through the canyon bottom and must be forded at several points — water shoes or old sneakers are strongly recommended. The iron rungs and ladders were installed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and are regularly maintained. Dogs are not permitted on this trail due to the ladder and rung sections. Spring is the most dramatic season, with high water and lush canyon vegetation, but summer and fall visits are equally rewarding.
