Rogue River Trail

Rogue River Trail loops along the banks of the celebrated Rogue River at Valley of the Rogue State Park, one of the most historically significant and ecologically rich rivers in the American West. The Rogue is famous for its outstanding steelhead and Chinook salmon runs, which attract anglers from throughout the region and support a diverse community of wildlife that depends on these fish for sustenance. The trail follows the river's edge through a riparian corridor of Oregon ash, cottonwood, and willow, with the river visible throughout and multiple access points to the water's edge. During fall, when Chinook salmon enter the river on their spawning migration, the fish can be observed from the riverbank in extraordinary numbers, their dark shapes visible in the clear green water as they navigate the rapids and pools on their final journey. Bald eagles, osprey, great blue herons, and belted kingfishers all hunt along the river, drawn by the abundant fish populations. Common mergansers and buffleheads dive in the deeper pools. River otters occasionally swim past the trail access points. The Rogue River is designated a National Wild and Scenic River for much of its length upstream, and the valley park provides an accessible entry point to this remarkable river system for visitors traveling the I-5 corridor between Medford and Grants Pass. The flat, paved surface makes this trail suitable for wheelchairs and strollers as well as walkers of all ages and abilities.
