Lake Trahlyta Loop

The Lake Trahlyta Loop circles the park's picturesque mountain lake—named for a Cherokee princess of local legend—through mature hardwood and rhododendron forest in Vogel State Park's developed area. Lake Trahlyta is a 22-acre impoundment on Burnett Creek, set in a narrow mountain valley at 2,258 feet elevation and ringed by rhododendron thickets that bloom spectacularly in late May and June. The reflection of the surrounding Blue Ridge peaks in the lake's surface has made this one of Georgia's most photographed state park scenes.

The loop trail is well-maintained with interpretive signs explaining the Cherokee cultural heritage of the Trahlyta legend—a story of a Cherokee woman transformed into a spring of water with healing powers. The boardwalk section along the lake's north shore provides close views of the water surface where wood ducks and hooded mergansers winter, and belted kingfishers patrol the shoreline year-round. Rainbow and brown trout are stocked in the lake for fishing, and herons wait motionlessly at the shallow inlet. The easy rating and short distance make this an excellent warm-up walk before tackling Bear Hair Gap Trail, or a satisfying standalone walk for visitors with limited time in the park.
