Iliau Nature Loop – Waimea Canyon Sp
The Iliau Nature Loop is a short interpretive trail at the rim of Waimea Canyon that introduces visitors to the rare iliau plant, a woody shrub endemic to the dry western slopes of Kauai and found nowhere else on Earth. Related to the silversword of Haleakala, the iliau produces a spectacular flowering stalk once in its lifetime before dying, attracting native Hawaiian honeycreeper birds during its bloom. The loop features interpretive signage identifying native Hawaiian dryland plants including wiliwili, prickly pear cactus introduced by early Polynesians, and several rare shrubs found only in this corner of the Pacific. The trail begins at a pullout along the road through Waimea Canyon and offers good canyon views without any significant climbing. It serves as an excellent introduction to the unique ecology of Kauai western slope for visitors who may not have time for longer hikes into the canyon. Birders will appreciate the open scrubland habitat, which attracts both native and migratory bird species throughout the year.
