The Kukui Trail is the most demanding route in Waimea Canyon State Park, descending steeply from the canyon rim all the way to the Waimea River on the canyon floor. The 2,100-foot descent happens over just 2.5 miles each way, making the return climb a serious physical challenge that should not be underestimated. The trail is named for the kukui nut tree, Hawaii state tree, whose silver-green leaves line the upper portions of the route. As hikers drop through successive layers of volcanic geology, the vegetation shifts dramatically from dry shrubland at the rim to lush riparian forest at the river bottom. The Waimea River offers a refreshing swim and a chance to observe freshwater species unique to the Hawaiian Islands. The canyon floor feels remote and primeval, a world apart from the canyon overlooks above. Hikers should carry ample water, as no reliable sources exist along the trail, and the exposed descent can be extremely hot during midday hours in summer months.
