The Indian Trail traverses Watkins Glen State Park's north rim, offering a quieter alternative to the busy Gorge Trail with excellent overlook perspectives and access to a popular natural swimming hole in Glen Creek below the main gorge complex. The 2.5-mile out-and-back route begins near the upper park entrance and follows the rim northward through a mixed forest of sugar maple, basswood, and hemlock, with several signed overlooks perched above the gorge walls. At the trail's turnaround point a rough use path descends to a wide creek pool shaded by overhanging rock shelves, a favorite local swimming spot on summer weekends. The north rim sees considerably fewer visitors than the gorge itself, providing a more peaceful experience during peak summer season when the Gorge Trail can feel crowded. The trail surface is natural dirt with modest rooty sections; trekking poles are helpful during wet conditions. Dogs are permitted on leash throughout the Indian Trail. The overlooks provide northward views toward Seneca Lake, the largest and deepest of the Finger Lakes, whose 618-foot depth was carved by the same glacial forces responsible for the gorge immediately below.
