Volksmarch Trail

The Volksmarch Trail is a classic Florida woodland loop through the diverse upland and wetland communities of Wekiwa Springs State Park, originally established as part of a national Volkssport hiking program and still one of the park's most popular routes. The trail crosses several small stream drainages that feed into Wekiwa Creek, where boardwalk sections span the wettest crossings over root-laced creek banks. The forest composition shifts dramatically between the sandy upland ridges, dominated by longleaf and slash pine, and the creek bottoms dense with swamp bay, red maple, and bald cypress.

This trail is excellent for birding throughout the year: in winter, hermit thrushes and yellow-rumped warblers move through the understorey, while in summer, acadian flycatchers and yellow-throated warblers nest in the mature forest. Barred owls are reliably encountered near the creek crossings at dusk. White-tailed deer are commonly seen at dawn and dusk in the open pine sections. The trail is well-blazed with blue paint on trees and is suitable for family hiking. The creek crossings after heavy summer rains may involve ankle-deep wading over submerged roots.
