Skeeko Bay Trail

The Skeeko Bay Trail ventures into the forested interior of Wild Horse Island, climbing away from the lake shore landing areas into the ponderosa pine and Douglas fir woodland that covers the island higher terrain. The route provides access to the island interior habitat where wild horses spend the warmer daylight hours resting in the shade of larger trees, and where bighorn sheep move between rocky outcroppings and grassy openings throughout the day.

Bald eagle nests in this section of the island are particularly accessible to observation from respectful distances, and the adults are reliably present during the nesting season from February through July. The trail reaches its turnaround point above Skeeko Bay, a protected cove on the island leeward side where the calm water reflects the surrounding forest and the distant Mission Mountains rise dramatically above the eastern lakeshore. The Mission Mountains, permanently snowcapped well into summer, provide a spectacular backdrop visible from multiple points along this route. Otters occasionally appear in the bay below, and osprey hunt the shallows regularly. The island interior feels genuinely wild despite the relatively modest scale of the landmass, a quality that reflects both the ecological health of the habitat and the careful management approach that has kept Wild Horse Island free from development and motorized access.
