Nature Trail

The Nature Trail at Wildcat Hills State Recreation Area winds through a dramatic landscape of pine-clad sandstone buttes along the Pine Ridge escarpment in western Nebraska's Panhandle region, offering sweeping views across the North Platte River valley from exposed ridgeline overlooks. The trail begins near the wildlife exhibit building, where a captive bighorn sheep enclosure provides close viewing of the animals before hikers encounter the wild herd that has been successfully reintroduced to the buttes above. The path climbs through open ponderosa pine woodland on rocky sandstone terrain, passing through a landscape that feels more Montana than Nebraska, with rugged terrain and sky-wide panoramas.

The North Platte River valley spreads out far below the overlook sections of the trail, the river's cottonwood gallery visible as a green ribbon across the pale agricultural plain. The Wildcat Hills are an outlier of the Pine Ridge formation, an erosional remnant of the ancient High Plains surface that has been deeply dissected by the North Platte drainage. Rocky Mountain species reach the eastern edge of their range here, including the Rocky Mountain juniper and South Dakota pronghorn antelope that range into the area. The trail surface is rocky and requires careful footing on the steeper sections, and lightning is a significant hazard on the exposed sandstone ridgelines during summer thunderstorms. The terrain and vegetation are distinctly western in character, making this feel like a longer and more remote hike than the statistics suggest.
