Wildlife Viewing Loop

The Wildlife Viewing Loop at Wildcat Hills State Recreation Area was designed specifically to maximize wildlife encounters in the area managed for bighorn sheep reintroduction, making it the most focused wildlife watching trail in the Nebraska Panhandle region. The loop departs from the captive wildlife exhibit building, where Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep and other native species are maintained in naturalistic enclosures for close-range viewing, and then climbs through the adjacent ponderosa pine woodland into the wild bighorn sheep range above the recreation area. Multiple viewing platforms and benches positioned along the loop face the rocky sandstone hillsides where the reintroduced wild herd is most frequently observed.

The wild bighorn sheep population at Wildcat Hills represents one of the few successful reintroductions of this species in the Great Plains east of the Rocky Mountains, and the herd has grown steadily since the first animals were brought from Colorado in the 1980s. Rams in the fall rut stage dramatic head-butting competitions on the rocky slopes visible from trail-side overlooks. Pronghorn antelope are also reliable sightings along the loop, moving through the pine-grassland interface with their characteristic stiff-legged gait. Wild turkeys and mule deer complete the large mammal assemblage. The loop terrain is gentle enough for families with children while still providing the elevated vantage points necessary for effective wildlife spotting. Dawn and dusk are the most productive viewing times; midday visits in summer often find the bighorn resting in shaded rocky alcoves invisible from below.
