📈 Elevation Profile
Spoonauger Falls isn't on most people's radar, which is exactly why it's worth seeking out. This 50-foot plunge waterfall drops into a narrow canyon along Spoonauger Creek, just a short walk from the Wild and Scenic Chattooga River in Sumter National Forest. The trail is brief but steep, and the payoff is a waterfall that feels genuinely remote and untamed.
Trail Overview
Park at the Burrells Ford Road bridge over the Chattooga River and follow the user-created path upstream along Spoonauger Creek. The trail is not officially maintained but is well-worn. After a short climb through laurel thickets and river birch, the trail drops to the canyon rim and then via a steep, rocky scramble to the pool at the base. The final descent requires using hands on some sections — this is where the Moderate label comes from.
The Waterfall
Spoonauger Creek pinches through a notch in the canyon wall and launches off a basalt ledge, dropping the full 50 feet in one clean plunge. The pool at the base is deep and dark, surrounded by overhanging cliffs. It's the kind of waterfall that rewards patience — the light in the canyon is dramatic in the late morning when it penetrates the narrow opening above.
Tips for Your Visit
- Scrambling required: The final descent to the pool involves a short rock scramble — not suitable for those uncomfortable with heights
- Chattooga River: Combine with a swim or fishing session at the Burrells Ford bridge pool
- Season: Spring for high water; the canyon is beautiful year-round
- No signage: Navigate carefully on the approach trail
