Stats: 6.0 miles, 800ft gain, Moderate. Type: Out-and-Back. Surface: Slickrock/Sand. Time: 3-4 hours. Fee: $7 BLM permit (lottery). Dogs: Yes. Permit: Yes.
Wildlife: pronghorn, coyotes, ravens, peregrine falcons, Gila woodpeckers.
Best seasons: October through May to avoid summer extreme heat; permit required — apply 4 months in advance via recreation.gov. The Wave is one of the most photographed geological formations on Earth — a swirling sandstone landscape of undulating cross-bedded Navajo sandstone near the Arizona border. Only 64 permits issued per day preserve its pristine condition.
Pack plenty of water — desert and high-altitude trails demand more hydration than you expect. Layers are essential above 10,000 feet.
Leave No Trace: stay on designated trails, pack out all waste, and respect wildlife and other visitors.
