About Twin Falls

Twin Falls Resort State Park in Wyoming County is one of southern West Virginia's most scenic outdoor destinations. The park takes its name from two waterfalls — one on Cabin Creek and one on Bear Hole Creek — that tumble in parallel through a forested gorge. The creeks converge below the falls, creating a photogenic double cascade unlike anything else in WV.

The trail network through the park winds through second-growth hardwood forest of oak, maple, and tulip poplar. The gorge terrain keeps the trails shaded and cool even in August. The park also features a golf course, lodge, and camping, making it an excellent base for exploring Coal Heritage country.

Trail Highlights

  • Two side-by-side waterfalls on parallel creek drainages
  • Shaded forest trails stay cool even on hot summer days
  • Full-service state park with lodge, camping, and golf
  • Excellent base for exploring the Coal Heritage Trail region
  • Falls are accessible on a well-marked loop trail system

Trail Description

From the park visitor center, pick up the Twin Falls Trail heading toward the gorge. The trail descends gradually through hardwood forest to the canyon floor, where you will first encounter the Cabin Creek falls — a broad 15-foot cascade over layered sandstone.

Cross the footbridge and continue upstream to the Bear Hole Creek falls, equally impressive and set in a slightly narrower gorge. Both falls have deep pools popular with swimmers in summer. The loop trail returns to the visitor center via the upper rim, offering treetop views down into the gorge.

Tips & What to Bring

  • The falls are best in spring (April-May) after snowmelt and spring rains
  • Park at the visitor center and pick up a trail map before heading out
  • Swimming in the plunge pools is popular — bring a towel in summer
  • The gorge trails can be muddy after rain — trekking poles help on descent
  • Combine with a night at the park lodge for a full West Virginia weekend
