Vernal Fall: The Mist Trail Classic in Yosemite National Park
Yosemite National Park, Mariposa County
About Vernal Fall
The Mist Trail to Vernal Fall is, mile for mile, one of the most dramatic hikes in the United States. The trail climbs the canyon beside the roaring Merced River to a spray-soaked staircase cut from solid granite that delivers you to the top of the 317-foot falls. In peak flow — May and June — the mist is so heavy that hikers are completely soaked by the time they reach the top.
The trail continues beyond Vernal Fall to Nevada Fall and the high country, but the 3-mile round trip to Vernal Fall alone is a complete and spectacular experience. The views from the top of the falls — including a terrifying look back down the granite staircase — are among the most memorable in Yosemite. This trail demands respect: wet granite is extremely slippery.
Trail Highlights
- 317-foot freefall over a perfect granite ledge into a deep pool
- The spray-soaked Mist Trail staircase is one of Yosemite's most unique trail experiences
- Views from the top of the falls looking back down the Merced River gorge
- Continue beyond for Nevada Fall, Half Dome, and the high country
- One of the most visited trails in the national park system — arrive very early
Trail Description
From Happy Isles (Shuttle Stop 16), cross the footbridge and follow the Mist Trail upstream. The first mile climbs steadily beside the Merced River. After the Vernal Fall footbridge the granite staircase begins — and so does the mist.
The staircase ascends 600 steps of polished granite beside the plunging falls. In peak flow you will need a waterproof layer — the spray is relentless. The top of the falls arrives suddenly: the roaring Merced spreads across the granite shelf before plunging 317 feet. Return via the same trail (or the longer John Muir Trail for a loop).
Tips & What to Bring
- Wear a rain jacket and cover your camera — the mist on the staircase soaks everything
- The granite stairs are dangerously slippery when wet — use the handrail
- Leave no electronics or valuables in your car — theft is a serious problem at Happy Isles
- Arrive at the trailhead by 6:30am on summer weekends to guarantee a parking spot
- The falls are most spectacular in May-June but remain excellent through July
