About Virgin Falls

Virgin Falls is one of the most extraordinary waterfall experiences in the eastern United States. The falls drop 110 feet from a limestone ledge into a cave at the base — the water disappears underground at the bottom rather than flowing downstream. This unique geology creates a truly unforgettable sight in the White County wilderness of the Cumberland Plateau.

The trail to Virgin Falls is a demanding 8-mile round trip with 1,200 feet of elevation change across rugged karst terrain. The route passes several other cave springs and sinkholes before reaching the main falls. This is genuine Tennessee backcountry — remote, wild, and visited only by committed hikers. The payoff is exceptional.

Trail Highlights

  • 110-foot plunge into a cave at the base — water disappears underground
  • Karst geology with cave springs and sinkholes along the approach
  • One of the most unique waterfall experiences in the eastern US
  • 8-mile backcountry hike ensures solitude and a true wilderness feel
  • Additional smaller waterfalls and cave features along the trail

Trail Description

From the Big Laurel Branch trailhead off Eastland Road, follow the trail south into the White County backcountry. The path descends from the plateau into a series of hollows, crossing Big Laurel Branch several times on wooden footbridges.

After 4 miles the trail delivers you to the rim of the Virgin Falls gorge. Scramble carefully down to the base via the steep use trail. The 110-foot cascade drops into the cave mouth below — the thunder of water echoing from the cave is extraordinary. Return via the same route.

Tips & What to Bring

  • This is a full-day commitment — start no later than 8am
  • Bring 3 liters of water — there are no reliable water sources on the trail
  • The descent to the base of the falls involves Class 3 scrambling — use your hands
  • Wear long pants to protect against brush in the lower hollow sections
  • The area is managed by the state — visit tn.gov for current regulations
