About Wahkeena Falls and Devil's Rest

Wahkeena Falls is the starting point for one of the most rewarding waterfall hikes in the Columbia River Gorge. The 242-foot cascade drops in a narrow chute near the Historic Columbia River Highway, but the real payoff comes from continuing up the Wahkeena Trail through old-growth Douglas fir and basalt canyon terrain past Fairy Falls, Vista Point, and to the Devil's Rest overlook at 1,600 feet above the Columbia.

The loop can be completed by returning via the Multnomah Falls trail, combining two of the gorge's most famous waterfalls in a single circuit. The views of the Columbia River from the upper trail are extraordinary — Oregon and Washington spread out below in a panorama that captures the full grandeur of the gorge.

Trail Highlights

  • 242-foot main cascade plus Fairy Falls and additional gorge waterfalls on the loop
  • Devil's Rest overlook at 1,600 feet delivers panoramic Columbia River Gorge views
  • Loop with Multnomah Falls creates an epic Columbia Gorge waterfall circuit
  • Old-growth Douglas fir forest on the upper trail above the gorge rim
  • Seasonally dramatic ice formations on the cliff faces in winter

Trail Description

From the Wahkeena Falls trailhead on the Historic Columbia River Highway, cross the footbridge below the falls and begin ascending the Wahkeena Trail. The cascade is immediately visible from multiple angles on the lower trail.

Continue up the switchbacks past Fairy Falls and Vista Point to the Devil's Rest overlook at 2.5 miles. The Columbia River panorama from here is one of the gorge's finest views. Descend via the Multnomah Falls trail connection for the full loop, or retrace your steps.
