About Watson Falls

Watson Falls is the tallest waterfall in the Umpqua National Forest, dropping 272 feet through a narrow basalt slot deep in a mossy, fern-draped canyon. Despite the dramatic height, the trail to the base is only 0.4 miles — though those 400 feet of elevation gain up the canyon wall make it feel like a workout. The payoff is extraordinary: a tall, thundering plunge in a cathedral of ancient Douglas fir.

Located just minutes from the famous Toketee Falls on OR-138 in Douglas County, Watson Falls makes an obvious companion stop for anyone visiting the North Umpqua River corridor. The canyon is dramatically narrower and more enclosed than Toketee, with the walls closing in tightly around the base of the falls to create an intimate, almost overwhelming sensory experience.

Trail Highlights

  • 272-foot plunge — the tallest waterfall in Umpqua National Forest
  • Dramatic narrow basalt slot canyon at the base of the falls
  • Short but steep trail (400 ft gain in 0.4 miles) for a genuine workout payoff
  • Minutes from Toketee Falls — easily combined on the same day
  • Mossy, fern-draped canyon walls create a lush Pacific Northwest aesthetic

Trail Description

From the Watson Falls trailhead on Forest Road 37, the trail immediately begins climbing steeply through old-growth Douglas fir on wooden stairs and switchbacks. The canyon walls close in as you gain elevation.

Tips & What to Bring

  • The steep trail is slippery when wet — trekking poles are recommended for the descent
  • Combine with Toketee Falls (2 miles away) for the two best waterfalls in the Umpqua NF
  • Peak flow is November through May — summer can see reduced but still beautiful flow
  • The narrow canyon amplifies the sound of the falls — hearing protection is not needed but the roar is impressive
  • A Northwest Forest Pass is required for parking
