Best seasons: July through mid-September; the wildflower display in Maroon Bells basin is among Colorado's finest. West Maroon Pass at 12,500 feet is the high route between Aspen and Crested Butte — one of Colorado's most classic alpine crossings. The Maroon Bells views on the Aspen side are simply unmatched.
Pack plenty of water — desert and high-altitude trails demand more hydration than you expect. Layers are essential above 10,000 feet.
