About Yahoo Falls

Yahoo Falls is Kentucky's tallest waterfall at 113 feet, and the setting is as dramatic as the height. The falls plunge from a massive sandstone overhang into a deep pool, with the overhanging cliff creating a sheltered alcove where you can walk behind the thin curtain of water. Located in the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area in McCreary County, it is a crown jewel of the Kentucky backcountry.

The trail to Yahoo Falls passes through typical Big South Fork sandstone canyon country — towering bluffs, deep hemlock hollows, and crystal-clear streams. The area was historically home to the Yahoo Arch, a natural sandstone arch visible from the falls area, adding geological interest to the waterfall experience.

Trail Description

From the Yahoo Falls trailhead on KY-700, follow the trail south into the Big South Fork drainage. The trail descends gradually through oak and hemlock forest, passing several scenic rock outcrops along the way.

After 1.8 miles the trail arrives at Yahoo Creek and the base of the falls. The overhang is so large that the entire plunge pool stays dry in light rain. Walk to the far edge of the plunge pool for the best view of the full 113-foot drop. Return via the same route.

Tips & What to Bring
