📈 Elevation Profile
Yellow Branch Falls is the kind of waterfall that makes you wonder why it isn't more famous. A graceful 50-foot curtain of water drops over a curved rock face in a quiet corner of Sumter National Forest, at the end of a relaxed, nearly flat trail that's ideal for families and beginners.
Trail Overview
The Yellow Branch Trail (#372) departs from a small Forest Service trailhead on Nicholson Ford Road. The path follows Yellow Branch creek through an open hardwood forest, crossing the stream twice on stepping stones before delivering you to the falls. The grade is very gentle throughout, making this a perfect first waterfall hike for kids.
The Waterfall
Yellow Branch Falls curves slightly as it descends, giving it an elegant, amphitheater-like quality. The wide pool at its base is shallow and clear, with a sandy bottom visible through the flow. A large flat boulder makes for ideal picnic seating directly in front of the cascade. In high water, the spray reaches 20 feet out from the base.
Tips for Your Visit
- Best time: Late winter through spring for maximum flow; summer visits can see reduced volume
- Difficulty: Suitable for young children; the only challenge is the stream crossings (rocks can be slippery)
- Facilities: No restrooms at the trailhead
- Parking: Gravel pullout for 8–10 vehicles on Nicholson Ford Road
Getting There
From Walhalla, take SC-28 north to Nicholson Ford Road, turn right, and continue about 5 miles to the signed trailhead on the left. The road is unpaved for the last 2 miles — suitable for most vehicles.
