Insoles: The Overlooked Component

The stock footbeds that come with most hiking boots and shoes are designed to fit the average foot reasonably well — which means they fit no foot particularly well. Aftermarket insoles are one of the highest-value upgrades available for hiking footwear, and one of the most consistently overlooked.

The primary function of an upgraded insole is arch support and heel cupping. A well-matched insole improves the foot's alignment under load, reduces the rotational movement of the foot in the boot (which causes hot spots and blisters), and distributes pressure more evenly across the heel and forefoot.
