🗺️ Trail Map
Not every great trail needs to climb a mountain. Minute Man National Historic Park Trail proves the point beautifully — a 5.0-mile out-and-back through the kind of flat, expansive, wind-scoured landscape that has its own intense beauty, different in character from alpine scenery but no less compelling. Located at Concord, MA in Massachusetts, this trail offers one of the best easy hikes in the state.
The trail moves through a distinctive coastal or lowland ecosystem — marshland, dune grass, open water, or river flats depending on the specific location. Wildlife is often the real draw here: shorebirds, herons, osprey, turtles, and in some seasons, the kind of migratory waterfowl concentrations that make birdwatchers drive hours for a single morning. Bring binoculars. Even if you're not a birder, watching a great blue heron fish in a tidal flat is one of those experiences that reminds you how much is happening just beyond the edge of the trail.
With only 200 feet of elevation gain over 5.0 miles, this is a genuinely accessible trail. It's appropriate for families with kids, casual hikers, and anyone recovering from injury who still wants to be outside. The footing is generally good, though some sections can be soft or muddy after rain. Wear waterproof boots or trail runners if the weather has been wet.
Trail rating: Easy. Estimated time: 2.5 hours. Best visited Year-round.
Access info: Fee: Free. Dogs: Yes (leash). Permits: None. Surface: Paved, dirt.
Massachusetts has no shortage of dramatic high-country trails, but sometimes the best morning outdoors is a slow, flat walk through living landscape that most people drive past without stopping. This trail is worth stopping for.
