🗺️ Trail Map
The Ouachita National Recreation Trail runs 223 miles from Talimena State Park in Oklahoma's Le Flore County to Pinnacle Mountain State Park in central Arkansas, making it one of the longest hiking trails in the South. The Oklahoma section follows the Winding Stair Mountains — a series of east-west ridges covered in shortleaf pine, oak, and hickory with mile after mile of ridge-top views into the Oklahoma and Arkansas lowlands. The trail passes through the heart of the Ouachita National Forest, one of the oldest national forests in the South.
The most spectacular segment for day hiking is the 10-mile stretch along the Rich Mountain ridge from Talimena State Park, which stays mostly on the ridgeline at 2,400–2,600 feet with nearly continuous views on both sides. In October, the ridge becomes a corridor for migrating monarch butterflies, and the hardwood colors rival any New England foliage display. The trail is well-marked with white squares and consistently maintained by trail crews and volunteers. Water sources are limited on the ridges; carry at least 2 liters.
The trail is free to hike; Talimena State Park charges $5 vehicle fee. Dogs are allowed on leash. Best season is March–May and September–November. Summer is hot and humid. No permit required for day hiking or primitive camping in the national forest.
