Cove Beach Trail – Ano Nuevo Sp
The Cove Beach Trail at Ano Nuevo State Park descends through coastal scrub to a sheltered cove where Cascade Creek meets the Pacific Ocean, creating a rich intertidal zone ideal for tidepool exploration. This short and accessible out-and-back route rewards visitors with dramatic rocky outcroppings and an array of marine life including purple sea urchins, sea stars, hermit crabs, anemones, and colorful nudibranchs clinging to wave-washed rocks. The cove beach itself is a crescent of coarse sand framed by rocky headlands that break incoming swells, creating relatively calm conditions near shore. Low tide reveals extensive reef platforms where careful observers can spot ochre sea stars and owl limpets occupying distinct zones based on wave exposure. The creek mouth supports a riparian corridor of willows and alders that attracts migrating songbirds in spring and fall, adding birdwatching appeal to the coastal experience. Whales are sometimes visible offshore during gray whale migration seasons in winter and spring. The trail is well-maintained and suitable for families, though visitors should always be cautious of sneaker waves on the exposed sections of coastline near the cove entrance. This lesser-visited corner of Ano Nuevo offers a quieter alternative to the busy elephant seal viewing areas.
