The Interior Trail at Cayo Costa State Park cuts through the heart of the island, moving from pine flatwoods into a lush palm hammock that feels worlds away from the open Gulf beach just minutes away. This central corridor showcases the ecological diversity that makes Cayo Costa one of Florida most botanically interesting barrier islands, with cabbage palms forming a dense canopy over an understory of wild coffee, saw palmetto, and native wildflowers.

The transition from xeric scrubby flatwoods to the mesic palm hammock interior is abrupt and striking, a reminder of how dramatically conditions change across a barrier island. Wild pigs have created rooting disturbances throughout the understory, and their tracks are frequently visible in the sandy soil. White-tailed deer are present in small numbers, and raccoons are common. The hammock provides critical stopover habitat for migrating songbirds during spring and fall, when warblers, tanagers, and thrushes funnel through in impressive diversity. Butterflies are abundant around flowering shrubs in warmer months. The trail offers welcome shade compared to the exposed Gulf beach, making midday hiking considerably more comfortable. Combining the Interior Trail with the Island Loop provides a comprehensive cross-section of Cayo Costa remarkable natural communities.
