North Beach Walk – Cayo Costa Sp
The North Beach Walk at Cayo Costa State Park follows the northern tip of the island where Gulf currents converge with Pine Island Sound, creating an especially productive zone for marine life and a premier destination for shelling and wildlife observation. The remote location and boat-access-only logistics mean this beach sees a fraction of the visitors that comparable Gulf beaches receive, preserving a sense of wild seclusion that is increasingly rare along the Southwest Florida coast.
Bottlenose dolphins are frequently visible just offshore, often feeding cooperatively in the tidal currents that sweep around the island tip. West Indian manatees graze on seagrass in the calmer sound waters visible from the beach. The shelling here is exceptional even by Cayo Costa already impressive standards, as currents deposit shells from deeper offshore waters onto the northern tip. Common finds include lightning whelks, fighting conchs, calico scallops, and a variety of tulip shells. Wading birds including great white herons, snowy egrets, and reddish egrets work the shallows. Brown pelicans and royal terns dive the nearshore waters. The walk is short enough to serve as an add-on to longer island explorations, or as a standalone excursion for visitors focused on shelling and wildlife watching in one of Florida most pristine coastal settings.
