The Emerald Bay Overlook Trail leads to the most photographed viewpoint at Lake Tahoe, delivering one of the most iconic landscape vistas in all of California within just a half mile of walking. The overlook perches above the deep emerald-green waters of the bay, framing Fanette Island, the only natural island in Lake Tahoe, with the 1929 Vikingsholm Norse castle visible on the shore below. The short but steep trail climbs through granite boulders and Jeffrey pine to the viewpoint where visitors are consistently stopped in their tracks by the scale and color intensity of the scene before them. Vikingsholm itself is a remarkably intact example of Scandinavian architecture, built by heiress Lora Knight who imported craftsmen from Norway to construct the 38-room castle. The bay water takes on an otherworldly emerald hue due to its exceptional clarity and the shallow sandy bottom that reflects green wavelengths of light. This is one of the most visited viewpoints in the Sierra Nevada, so arriving early in the morning is strongly recommended to secure parking and enjoy the overlook without crowds. The trail is short enough for visitors of nearly all fitness levels and remains one of the highest reward-to-effort ratios of any viewpoint trail in the state park system.
