Lighthouse Loop – Dl Bliss Emerald Bay Sp
The Lighthouse Loop at D.L. Bliss State Park circles through old-growth forest and granite outcroppings to reach the restored 1916 lighthouse that once guided steamships across Lake Tahoe during the logging and resort era. The lighthouse is a charming two-story stone structure perched on a rocky point above the lake, offering sweeping views of the south and central basin of Tahoe and the Nevada mountains rising beyond the eastern shore. The surrounding forest is dominated by magnificent old-growth Jeffrey pines and red firs whose bark glows orange and cinnamon in afternoon light, filling the air with a distinctive vanilla-like fragrance on warm days. The loop climbs briefly through forest before emerging onto granite slabs where sweeping Tahoe Rim views extend in multiple directions. Interpretive signs along the route explain the ecological transitions between forest types at different elevations and aspects. The historic lighthouse has been carefully restored by the California State Parks system and is open for self-guided tours during summer months. Bigcone Douglas fir, mountain hemlock, and western white pine appear in the higher portions of the loop, reflecting the subalpine character of the Lake Tahoe Basin. The moderate rating reflects a short section of rocky scrambling near the lighthouse point that requires some care on the descent.
