The Big Cypress Bend Boardwalk is the gateway to one of the most biologically significant wetland forests in North America. Fakahatchee Strand contains the largest royal palm strand in the world and the densest concentration of native orchid species in North America, earning it a reputation as the Amazon of North America. The elevated boardwalk winds through a cathedral of ancient cypress draped in resurrection fern and Spanish moss, the dark tannin-stained water below reflecting this primordial landscape.

The ghost orchid, Florida most famous and elusive plant, finds its stronghold in this swamp. While sightings require luck and timing, the knowledge that these extraordinary flowers bloom somewhere in the shadows heightens every step of the walk. Bromeliads cling to every trunk and branch, their rosettes collecting water that supports tiny aquatic ecosystems. Alligators rest on emergent logs, and anhingas spread their wings to dry on cypress knees. The boardwalk is fully accessible and suitable for all visitors regardless of mobility, making it one of the rare places where a true Florida wilderness swamp experience requires no physical hardship. Wild orchid blooms peak from June through August but the forest rewards visitors year-round with changing light, wildlife, and the ineffable atmosphere of ancient swampland.
