The Western Lake Loop at Grayton Beach State Park circles one of the most celebrated coastal dune lakes in the United States, a rare geographic feature found in only a handful of places on Earth. These dynamic lakes periodically open to the Gulf of Mexico, creating a brackish mix that supports an extraordinary diversity of wildlife including wading birds, alligators, and migratory waterfowl.

The trail winds through wind-sculpted sand pine scrub and rolling white-quartz dunes before delivering sweeping views of the shimmering lake and its sugar-white shores. Grayton Beach itself has repeatedly been ranked among the top beaches in the nation, and this loop showcases why: pristine Panhandle scenery with minimal development. Interpretive panels explain the ecology of coastal dune lakes along the way. The surface is soft sand throughout, so expect a gentle workout even on flat terrain. Sunrise and late afternoon light transform the lake into a palette of gold and pink. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound year-round, and the surrounding scrub harbors gopher tortoises and Florida scrub-jays. This is an excellent introductory trail for families and first-time visitors to the Emerald Coast region.
