The Laguna Point Seal Watch loop is one of the most rewarding short wildlife viewing routes on the Northern California coast, circling a rocky headland at MacKerricher State Park where harbor seals gather year-round and reach peak numbers during pupping season from December through March. A purpose-built viewing platform at the headland tip positions visitors directly above the main haul-out rocks where dozens of seals rest, nurse pups, and engage in the social interactions that characterize pinniped colonies. Harbor seals are among the most approachable marine mammals in California, but the elevated viewing platform ensures observation without disturbance of the sensitive pupping aggregations. The sealed loop path is fully paved and accessible for visitors using wheelchairs and strollers, making this one of the best accessible wildlife viewing locations on the Mendocino coast. Interpretive panels installed by the California State Parks system explain seal biology, pupping ecology, and the threats facing harbor seal populations from climate change and human disturbance. Gray whales are frequently spotted offshore from the headland during their winter and spring migrations, providing a dual wildlife spectacle during the peak pupping season. Black oystercatchers work the rocky reef at the base of the headland, and Brandt cormorants and Pigeon guillemots nest on the offshore sea stacks visible from the viewing platform. This is an ideal first stop at MacKerricher for families and visitors with limited mobility who seek close encounters with wild marine mammals.
