Hazard Canyon Reef Trail – Montana De Oro Sp
The Hazard Canyon Reef Trail loops through coastal scrub to reach the broad tidepool reef and sheltered cove at Hazard Canyon, one of the most productive intertidal habitats in the Montana de Oro State Park system. The reef extends far offshore at low tide, exposing vast platforms of barnacle-encrusted rock where ochre sea stars, purple urchins, owl limpets, and aggregating anemones occupy distinct ecological zones from the splash zone to the subtidal fringe. A colony of harbor seals regularly hauls out on the rocks at the cove entrance, and the calm waters of the canyon protect sea otters that wrap themselves in kelp while sleeping offshore. The canyon itself is a deep erosional notch in the coastal bluff where a small seasonal stream drains the inland hills, creating a narrow riparian corridor of willows that attracts migrant songbirds during spring and fall. The loop trail traverses the blufftop before descending to the cove beach on a series of switchbacks that offer increasingly dramatic views of the reef and open ocean. Kayakers launch from this cove to explore the sea caves accessible only from the water. Low tide timing is critical for full tidepool access, and the park provides tide charts at the visitor center. The area is particularly productive for wildlife observation during early morning hours before visitor traffic disturbs the seals and sea otters.
