Black Hill Trail – Morro Bay Sp
The Black Hill Trail ascends one of the ancient volcanic peaks of the Morro Bay area, climbing 640 feet to a rocky summit that delivers a commanding 360-degree panorama encompassing Morro Rock, the bay estuary, the Sandspit dunes, and the Santa Lucia Mountains rising steeply inland. Black Hill is one of the Nine Sisters, a chain of volcanic plugs that extends from Morro Rock inland to San Luis Obispo, each remnant of separate volcanic intrusions that occurred roughly 25 million years ago and have eroded to their current rugged profiles. The trail begins at the park campground and climbs through a transition from eucalyptus groves to native coastal scrub and chaparral as elevation increases, with the vegetation becoming increasingly wind-sculpted near the exposed summit boulders. Peregrine falcons and red-tailed hawks hunt from the summit thermals, while the view down to the bay reveals the meandering channels of the estuary where tricolored blackbirds, great blue herons, and snowy egrets work the shallow margins. The bay itself is one of the most intact Pacific Coast estuaries in California, and the elevated perspective from Black Hill reveals its complex mosaic of salt marsh, eelgrass beds, and open water. Despite the strenuous rating driven by sustained steep grade, the short distance makes this an achievable challenge for moderately fit visitors seeking an unforgettable coastal panorama.
