Heron Rookery Loop – Morro Bay Sp
The Heron Rookery Loop at Morro Bay State Park circles through a grove of mature Eucalyptus trees that hosts the largest great blue heron rookery in California, where dozens of these magnificent birds nest in the upper branches and raise their young in full view of trail visitors each spring. Great blue herons stand nearly four feet tall with a wingspan exceeding six feet, and the sight of dozens of them perched in the eucalyptus canopy and engaged in elaborate nesting behaviors is one of the most dramatic wildlife spectacles on the Central Coast. Nesting season runs from December through July, during which the constant activity of courtship displays, nest building, incubation, and chick-rearing provides endless observation opportunities. The loop trail is flat and paved, making it fully accessible for visitors of all mobility levels. Beyond the rookery itself, the surrounding forest edges support Black-crowned night herons, Snowy egrets, and numerous songbird species that nest in the understory. Interpretive panels explain heron biology, nesting ecology, and the importance of the Morro Bay estuary as a foraging habitat for the breeding colony. The short distance makes this trail a practical combination with a visit to the nearby Morro Bay Museum of Natural History, located just steps from the trailhead at the edge of the park campground. Binoculars are strongly recommended for optimal viewing of nest activity in the upper canopy.
