North Trail Loop – Russian Gulch Sp
The North Trail Loop at Russian Gulch State Park climbs from the canyon floor into the inland hills above the Mendocino coast, connecting the fern canyon ecosystem with a pygmy forest plateau and providing a more strenuous alternative to the flat canyon trail for visitors seeking greater elevation gain and a broader perspective on the park diverse habitats. The loop gains 500 feet through a transition from coastal redwood and alder forest in the canyon bottom to mixed conifer forest of Douglas fir and tan oak on the upper slopes, eventually reaching the nutrient-poor hardpan terrace where the pygmy forest ecosystem of stunted cypress and pine creates its characteristic miniature landscape. The pygmy forest section of the loop connects ecologically with the similar habitat found at Van Damme State Park to the south, and both represent the same ancient marine terrace formations that produce the unusual soil chemistry responsible for the stunted growth. The upper loop ridgeline offers filtered ocean views through the forest canopy on clear days, and the breezy conditions above the canyon make this section particularly pleasant during the summer months when coastal fog creates cool conditions. The descent returns through the fern canyon, allowing hikers to experience the dramatic contrast between the open pygmy uplands and the enclosed, dripping fern grotto below. Mountain bikers use portions of this trail system, and trail etiquette requires yielding appropriately on shared sections. The moderate rating reflects the sustained climb rather than technical difficulty, and the loop rewards effort with the park greatest diversity of ecological communities in a single continuous route.
