Russian Gulch Falls Trail – Russian Gulch Sp
The Russian Gulch Falls Trail follows a fern-lined canyon upstream from the Mendocino coast to a spectacular 36-foot waterfall that cascades over a mossy sandstone ledge into a clear pool surrounded by one of the densest concentrations of ferns in Northern California. The canyon through which the trail runs is a temperate rainforest of breathtaking beauty, draped in sword ferns, five-finger ferns, lady ferns, and maidenhair ferns that carpet every available surface from the canyon floor to the top of the canyon walls. Coast redwoods appear in scattered groves throughout the canyon, their massive trunks wreathed in sorrel and fern, while red alders and big-leaf maples fill the riparian corridor with deciduous light that turns golden in fall. The rhododendron thickets along the middle canyon section bloom magnificently in May and early June, filling the forest with deep pink and magenta flowers that create one of the most spectacular understory displays in California. The trail is shaded throughout its length, making it a pleasure to hike even on warm summer days when coastal fog burns off and temperatures rise on the Mendocino headlands above. The waterfall basin is particularly magical in winter and early spring when rainfall maxes flow and the fern fronds are at their most intensely green. This moderate rating reflects the six-mile round-trip distance on a gentle grade rather than any technical difficulty; the trail surface is well-maintained and suitable for families with older children who can manage the distance.
