The Bayside Trail explores the sheltered Apalachicola Bay shoreline of St. George Island State Park, a habitat strikingly different from the open Gulf beach just steps away. Protected from wave action, the bay side supports dense stands of black needlerush marsh, scattered mangroves, and shallow tidal flats that attract an impressive array of wading birds and shorebirds. Ospreys nest prominently atop dead snags and channel markers visible from the trail.

The loop courses through scrub and marsh transition zones where wildlife viewing can be exceptional at dawn and dusk. Great blue herons stand motionless in the shallows while roseate spoonbills sweep their distinctive bills through the water in wide arcs. White pelicans congregate on the bay in winter months, sometimes in flocks numbering in the hundreds. Bottlenose dolphins frequently work the bay channels visible from the trail. The flat terrain and short distance make this an accessible choice for birders, families, and those seeking a quieter alternative to the popular Gulf beach. The Apalachicola Bay system is one of the most productive estuaries in North America, supporting the renowned Franklin County oyster fishery, and the Bayside Trail provides a front-row view of this ecological treasure.
