St. George Island State Park preserves some of the most undeveloped barrier island shoreline on the entire Gulf Coast, and the Beach Walk delivers four miles of round-trip access to this remarkable resource. Unlike the heavily developed western end of the island outside the park, this stretch of Gulf beach is free of condominiums and commercial establishments, offering a window into what the entire Florida Panhandle coast once looked like.

Bay scallops wash ashore here in impressive numbers during winter storms, alongside an abundance of other shell species that draw collectors from across the region. Loggerhead and leatherback sea turtles nest on the upper beach during summer months, and marked nests are a reminder of the conservation importance of this undisturbed shoreline. Least terns and black skimmers nest in loose colonies on the open sand during spring. Shelling is outstanding compared to more visited beaches. The consistently clear water and white quartz sand invite spontaneous swimming and wading at any point along the walk. Dolphins are a near-constant presence in the nearshore waters. The lack of shade means sun protection is essential, but early morning and late afternoon outings offer mild temperatures and spectacular light on the water year-round.
